about:Fediverse - An introduction to the decentralised social network
summary
Fediverse in 2025 is a live, federated social web built on ActivityPub JSON inbox/outbox and discoverable via webfinger handles like email. Around 150 open-source projects power roughly 27,000 community servers hosting millions of accounts (estimates run ~12–30M). Services include Mastodon, Friendica, PixelFed, PeerTube (uses WebTorrent and relay servers to spread video load), and WordPress/Drupal plugins; timelines are mostly chronological, moderation is local, funding is donation-driven, and interoperability relies on Fediverse Enhancement Proposals.
