The CPU in your browser: WebAssembly demystified

Talkat PyCon Italia 2023 · 2023-05-25..05-28· [webassembly, web-platform]

WebAssembly is a virtual CPU that runs the same binary in browsers, Node.js and Wasmtime; C compiles to .wasm, disassembles to WAT, and JITs to native code for near‑native speed. Demo compiles a C factorial, instantiates it from JavaScript and Python and the demo works. By default there is no IO or filesystem access; hosts provide functionality via imports or runtimes like Emscripten and the standard WASI. Strings use a shared linear memory and require pointer reading.
