HDR at Instagram: The iOS Story
summary
Instagram adds full HDR upload and playback support for iOS, moving from H.264 to HEVC main 10 profile for 10‑bit capture and preserving HDR for IGTV/Reels since mid‑2021; ingestion changes include 10‑bit pixel processing in the normal filter and a server-side tone map on the fly to serve SDR where needed. Playback integrates AVSampleBufferDisplayLayer into the custom player (it works but required major performance work), iOS14/16 features enable EDR UI fixes and future HDR editing paths.
