Open Source DEI: Transitioning from Intentions to Impact

slides:none on file

CHAOSS runs an interview campaign launched October 2022 that gathers qualitative and quantitative feedback from 150 participants to test whether CHAOSS DEI metrics actually shift outcomes. Metrics span events, governance, leadership and project/community signals (documentation accessibility, issue-label inclusivity, psychological safety). Findings show persistent gaps: invisible or unenforced codes of conduct, low retention of outreach cohorts, and disproportionate exclusion for non‑binary, POC, women and disabled people. Fixes that are already working include DEI badging that motivates change, enforcement steps, plus GitHub Actions and chat bots for inclusive‑language and safety checks.
