My gender is emoji pizza unicorn: shipping expanded gender options
summary
At Pinterest an engineer replaces a binary enum with an optional string on user struct to accept custom gender values and emoji, adds preferred-pronoun plumbing, and runs AB tests on signup. The first rollout shows AB experiment showed -1% then flat with click, mobile redesign improves metrics, and qualitative research shows positive sentiment. Internationalisation hits a snag because the localisation provider didn't support gender placeholders, so workarounds and translation strategy are required.
