The effect of explanations and algorithmic accuracy on visual recommender systems of artistic images
summary
Study tests a visual recommender built on UGallery item data that ranks by cosine similarity using either AlexNet fc6 4096-d vector (DNN) or 7-dim attractiveness features (brightness, sharpness, colorfulness, etc.). Three interfaces compare no explanation, example-based explanations (similar images), and transparent feature histograms. With N=121 users the DNN gives higher accuracy and benefits most from explanations (higher perceived relevance, explainability, satisfaction and trust), AVF yields greater perceived diversity, and overly detailed transparency can reduce effectiveness.
