Embracing the Future in a Multiplatform World: A Kotlin Story

Talkat GOTO Chicago 2019 · 2019-04-29..04-30· [kotlin]

Kotlin multiplatform shares app logic but not UI by compiling common code to JVM for Android, LLVM native for iOS and JS for web; a real Sudoku project shares the solver and a key/value persistence interface using expect/actual implementations. Concurrency uses coroutines, atomic references with compareAndSet, frozen objects and workers to avoid heisenbugs. Status in 2019 is very beta: networking and DB libraries like Retrofit and Room lack support, generics interop is unfinished, pilot adoption recommended Q1 next year, mainstream after 2021.
