Cloud Foundry runs traditional .NET apps on Windows 2012 R2 Diego cells using the binary buildpack and a garden-windows container (supports .NET 3.5+; apps must be compiled artifacts), while .NET Core apps run on Linux via the community asp.net 5 buildpack and Garden Linux. Windows containers use ACLs, temp user accounts, job objects and a “guard” for memory/process limits; Linux uses namespaces and cgroups. Recommendation: new projects try Core on Linux; lift-and-shift apps stay on 4.x Windows.
