The Prismatic World of CSS Colours
summary
History of CSS color names (16 from HTML, the rest from X11) gets traced to sRGB and hex notation like #BADA55, with the surprising fact that there are 148 named css colors and that "orange" was added to make the CSS1 test suite valid. Demos show HSL limitations, the move toward CIE/LAB and LCH in CSS Color Level 4/5, and new functions such as color-mix and color-contrast that aim to generate and evaluate palettes natively.
