Lightning Demo: Automating The Removal Of Unused CSS

Talkat Velocity Europe Conference 2013 · 2013-11-13..11-15· [web-performance]
slides:none on file

Demo of an automated build step that strips unused stylesheet rules using an unCSS module wired into a grunt task. Shows Bootstrap pages where roughly 89% unused (one tweeted case cited 91%) of framework rules are inert, and a sample site drops CSS from about 120KB → 18KB total after pruning. Tool parses pages, compares selectors against included stylesheets, removes dead rules at build time; some complex selectors still miss complete coverage.
