Software-defined radio is practical not theoretical: a low-cost SDR plus modest CPU (Raspberry Pi Zero for simple links, an i7 or cloud for video/4G) runs multiple standards so products survive spec changes. Prototyping in Octave/MATLAB yields compact code (26 lines in Octave, 20 minutes to code), compiled languages win speed (C fastest in benchmarks), Fortran performs well on large numeric loads, and offloading FIR/filtering into FPGA or the SDR module itself removes software bottlenecks. Pothos and socket-friendly drivers ease networking.
