RT Linux in Safety Critical Systems: the potential and the challenges
summary
Work in progress shows RT Linux can meet many safety and real‑time needs when configured and tested. Experiments run on a PREEMPT_RT kernel with PREEMPT_RT enabled and RT_GROUP_SCHED disabled use rtla and rt-tests, cyclictest and deadline test for one‑hour runs, measuring missed deadlines and “failed to perform within runtime.” Results show page migration successes exceed failures (acceptable under heavy compile load), and recommend mlockall and lock pages at init, disable unnecessary power/peripherals, and treat RT throttling as a sign of a broken workload.
