summary
Istio announces CNCF incubation and a new ambient mesh that aims to enable cluster‑wide mTLS with a few admin steps, shipping as Alpha in 1.18, Beta in 1.19 and targeting production in 1.20. Work focuses on a sidecar‑less model using a tailored Z tunnel that delivers large resource‑footprint and throughput/latency gains, plus multi‑cluster and VM support, ARM and dual‑stack networking, and alignment with the Kubernetes Gateway API Gamma standard.
