Gradient descent on overparameterized models converges to qualitatively different minimizers depending on parameterization and initialization scale: factorized matrix estimation with tiny initialization and small step sizes yields minimum nuclear norm solutions and good generalization, while large-scale initialization lands in the neural tangent kernel regime (minimum RKHS/L2 bias). A squared-parameter linear regression interpolates between minimum L1 norm and L2 solutions via an explicit “hyperentropy” complexity; logistic/exponential losses instead drive max-margin behavior.
