Around 2,000 native Lakota speakers remain and a revival effort motivates concrete tooling: Emacs quail input methods implemented with quail-define-package and quail-define-rules for two orthographies (Suggested/Standard and White Hat), mapping ASCII sequences to nasal marks, macrons and glottals. The packages are published on SourceHut and MELPA (increasing Emacs’ supported input methods from 205 to 207) and the input methods work for authoring and publishing with free software while a submission to Emacs core is underway.
