Ceph on Arm64/Ampere: IOPs/Watt Demystified

Talkat Cephalocon 2025 · 2025-10-28..10-29
slides:none on file

Comparison of Ampere Altra versus Ampere M1 (MR1) on Ceph shows the MR1 packs more cores per box and delivers higher throughput and efficiency: 400k IOPS at 1430 W, versus the older Altra result of 200k IOPS at 900 W (different node counts). Testbed is Ubuntu 24.04, containerized Ceph, 100 Gb network, three-node MR1 cluster with 3 nodes, 192 cores, 8 SSDs/node, 24 OSDs and 6,000 PGs. Results show 285 IOPS/W for MR1 vs 223 IOPS/W for Altra, linear scaling to 8 OSDs with no bottleneck and reads improving ~1.8x vs writes ~2x.
